Virat Kohli would have been a jubilant man after his team’s terrific comeback on Day 4 here at St Lucia. After Day 3 got washed out due to rain, there were really slim possibilities of a result coming out of this Test match, but Bhuvneshwar Kumar had some different plans up his sleeves.
With West Indies just one wicket down for 107 at the start of the day's play, very few would have expected that they would get bowled out for 225. But that indeed happen as the hosts lost their last 7 wickets for just 23 runs.
The collapse was initiated by the comeback man, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who was playing his first Test after a gap of one and a half years. The right-arm swing bowler first broke the dangerous looking partnership between Jermaine Blackwood and Marlon Samuels by getting rid of Blackwood with a beautiful outswinger. He then cleaned up Samuels in his very next over to get both the set batsmen back in the pavilion.
After picking up two important wickets, he continued his impressive spell of bowling, as he ripped apart the lower order to finish with a five-wicket haul. It was because of Bhuneshwar Kumar and his five-for that India were able to take a healthy lead of 128 runs at the end of the first innings.
Coming out to bat in the second innings, the openers provided just the right kind of start that the Indians required. They scored at more than a run-a-ball and added 49 runs to the team’s total in just 8 overs. However, two quick wickets of KL Rahul and Virat Kohli resulted in the run-rate to drop down and giving the hosts an outside chance to get back in the match. Nevertheless, it didn’t happen as the pair of Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma strung an unbeaten 85-run partnership to help India secure an overall lead of 285 runs at the close of play.
